This Ain’t No Pussy Show
WIP
Ever wondered if patriarchy was a pyramid scheme for men, too? Kate has and she ain't pussying around; she has a boy to raise and he has questions.
Why are you shouting?
Am I really toxic?
How come you can say dick but I can’t say pussy?
She has questions, too.
Kate, a dancer and a mother, together with Toby, a 14-year-old skater, deep-dive into our world right now. Using text, movement, skateboarding, map-making and rap music, they discuss privilege and patriarchy, feminism and masculinity, and reveal everything – faults and all. They make space for each other in a poetic and personal evocation of the relationship between mother and son.
It’s a messy, wild, unpredictable, and sometimes foolish terrain that doesn't have a clear ending. This is their map, a landscape of danger and misunderstanding, as they turn this black and white world into a sea of grey.
“This ain’t no pussy show, for real it ain't. What does it mean to raise a boy in our world in this time? What is my place as a mother and how can I safeguard him when he comes home stating ‘so, I’m the bad guy?’ Is he? Or more so will he be? How do I protect him from the ‘man box’ he’s already being indoctrinated into? How do I guide him to be the man we all want to see in the future when a ton of ‘toxic’ indoctrinating shit is coming his way? And Is our liberation tied to the liberation of our future men? Does equality lie in our separation or in our deep connection, compassion and liberation for each other.
“We are all one being, and none of us fully heals unless all of us heal together.”
Troy Cohen in response to Bell Hooks’ book ‘The Will to Change’.
